I took the lead on writing this email to our subscribers the day after the Dobbs leak in May 2022. The leak occurred the evening before Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Equal Pay Day, a major day of economic justice advocacy led by NAPAWF.

We had to communicate the possible impact of the leaked decision while making it clear that abortion was still legal at the time – all while ensuring our work for equal pay was not lost.

I also coded the branded HTML email template used for this message.

Friend,

Last night a leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization indicated that a majority of justices intend to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that established a constitutional right to abortion.

To be clear: the leaked document was just a draft. Abortion remains legal and if you or someone you know has a scheduled appointment for abortion care, this does not affect that.

It is expected the court will release their final opinion on the Dobbs case sometime before the end of June. While we don’t know how close the draft opinion will be to the final one, it does match what many predicted - a packed conservative court of unelected justices is set to eliminate the legal right to abortion, a reproductive right that seven out of ten Asian Americans support.

This will be devastating to Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) people, especially those working in low-wage, frontline jobs.

AANHPI women are overrepresented in frontline and low-wage positions, especially in the retail, restaurant, and personal care industries. Not having safe and reliable access to abortion only exacerbates the economic barriers working people face in their everyday lives.

We are continuing to fight back and you can join us today online for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Equal Pay Day. Today, NAPAWF is raising awareness on how unequal pay affects AANHPI women and girls, including making health care and access to contraception and abortion care inaccessible.

We know this news is appalling, rage inducing, and disheartening, even if you knew it was coming. As we make space to collectively fight back, we also encourage you to take the time you need to be with loved ones and take care of yourself.

In Solidarity,

Sung Yeon Choimorrow (she/her/hers)
